What is PGT-A Testing? How It Prevents Miscarriages in IVF

Fertility care Kindle Womb

For couples undergoing In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), a positive pregnancy test is the goal. However, experiencing a miscarriage after successful implantation is an emotionally devastating hurdle.

Fortunately, advanced embryology screening methods are now available to minimize these risks. Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidies (PGT-A) plays a crucial role in preventing miscarriages.

In this guide, we outline how PGT-A testing works and how it is applied at our advanced diagnostics center in Jaipur.

Understanding Aneuploidy and Miscarriage

Aneuploidy refers to an abnormal number of chromosomes in an embryo. Chromosomal anomalies are the leading cause of early miscarriage, accounting for over 50% of first-trimester pregnancy losses.

As maternal age increases, the likelihood of chromosomal errors in eggs rises. PGT-A allows embryologists to count chromosomes in each embryo to identify anomalies before transfer.

How the PGT-A Process Works

The screening protocol involves a few key steps in our lab:

  • Blastocyst Culture: Embryos are grown in the lab until Day 5 or 6 (the blastocyst stage).
  • Embryo Biopsy: A highly skilled embryologist extracts a few cells from the trophectoderm (outer layer).
  • Embryo Freezing: The embryos are safely cryopreserved while the genetic samples undergo chromosomal profiling.
  • Euploid Selection: Only genetically normal (euploid) embryos are selected for subsequent frozen embryo transfers.

The Clinical Benefits of PGT-A

By transferring only chromsomal healthy embryos, PGT-A provides key benefits:

  • Reduces miscarriage rates significantly, especially for women over 35.
  • Shortens the overall time to achieve a successful pregnancy.
  • Improves implantation success rates per transfer.

At Kindle Womb IVF, we leverage state-of-the-art genetic diagnostics to offer couples maximum safety and success on their conception journey.
